meanders

Other Constellations, 17.5” x 1.5”

This latest series was inspired by the original and intricate work of the Italian architect and glass designer Carlo Scarpa (1906-1978). Meanders refer to the curves and loops in rivers and roads that take you all over the place before getting you to your destination.

The Meanders begin in my shop as fused bars of glass with patterns inside. The pattern bars go on to the hot shop to be heated and stretched and cut into murrine. Fabrication, fusing, forming and finishing follow, back in my shop. Some of the surfaces are carved to resemble hammered metal, some are etched for a matte effect, some are left glossy.

Pieces range from 8" to 22" long.

Puzzles

Puzzles can be absorbing and playful. Labyrinths come to mind with this series. These are made with with strips of sheet glass on edge, alternating opaque and transparent glasses to give visual depth. There really is no start and finish to these mazes.

Canes

These threads are drawn from a molten pool of hot glass; they come in a candy store of colors. Much of what I make starts with “what if?” What if I embedded glass threads in a solid clear matrix? And then cut the glass in strips to expose the edges? And then laid the strips in patterns. Or pulled fanciful organisms from those threads and layered them in glass “ponds”....A glimpse of part of a sculpture in the Corning Museum sparked this one. The patterns in the Evidence series remind me of the results of gel electrophoresis of proteins. (I used to work as a medical lab technologist.)
